About Us

Edo State Women’s Association (ESWA) was established in the UK in 1991 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting market women in Edo State, Nigeria. From its inception, ESWA has sought to empower women economically and socially, recognizing their pivotal role in sustaining local economies and communities.

Early Initiatives and Funding

In its early years, ESWA relied on funding from donations, grants, and fundraising events. Support was also extended through shipments of essential goods and resources from the United Kingdom to benefit individual market women in Edo State.

In 2000, ESWA secured a grant from the UK National Lottery to conduct a comprehensive situation analysis of market women in Edo State. The findings highlighted critical needs, including access to affordable childcare for children six months to six years and financial capital to grow their businesses. This report served as a foundation for subsequent initiatives and fundraising efforts.
